Volvo exhibits its new medium sized material handler at Plantworx 2015

The Volvo wheeled excavator has proven to be a multi-purpose machine for a range of different applications. Now making its debut in the UK market, Volvo Construction Equipment is exhibiting a prime example of another development to the wheeled excavator in the guise of its 23 tonne EW210D Materials Handler.

The Volvo EW210D MH (Materials Handler) is designed for a wide range of duties including waste material handling, loading and unloading high sided bulkers and rail freight wagons - in fact, any application demanding good optimum reach and superior operator visibility. Based on the standard Volvo EW210D, the MH version has been significantly reinforced around the boom foot and machine superstructure areas to cope with the typical applications it has been designed for. Other significant differences are the hydraulically operated operator’s compartment, four stabilisers as standard, solid wheels and tyres and purpose built straight 6.5m materials handling boom and 5.0m grab arm.

The EW210D MH weighs in at 23.3 tonnes and is powered by a Stage IIIB Volvo 6 litre engine developing 169 net hp, achieving a maximum torque of Nm758 at just 1500rpm. The closed centre hydraulic system with pressure compensated valves provides independent movement of all the hydraulic functions with the main hydraulic pump delivering 420 litres per minute.

The materials handling equipment is mounted to a reinforced boom mounting point on the superstructure and features, as standard, boom float hydraulics designed to limit damage to the tops of containers as well as an adjustable boom height limitation to simplify operating in areas where height is an issue. With its 6.5m materials handling boom and 5.0m grab arm the EW210D MH has an impressive forward reach of 11.75

metres and an effective load over height including a multi tined grab of 10 metres. The maximum lifting capacity across carriage at 1.5m is a generous 3.1 tonnes. The hydraulically elevating cab has a maximum height under the cab of 4 metres when fully extended giving the operator a superb vantage point for viewing the work area. Other standard features on the machine are safety check valves, x3 rotation circuit, additional protection from the ingress of dust to the engine compartment, a reversible fan and impact resistant safety glass to the cab. A full package of LED lighting aids safe working during the hours of darkness.

The optimum end attachment on the 5.0m grab arm is a 600 litre multi tined grab with a working weight of 460kg. Alternatively the 5.0m grab arm can be changed for a slightly shorter 4.0m straight sorting arm which can be used with attachments such as sorting grapples. The maximum tool weight thus configured is 1120kg.

Volvo Construction Equipment markets wheeled loaders, articulated haulers, hydraulic excavators, graders, Volvo utility equipment and Volvo road equipment products in the U.K. There are eight strategically placed customer support centres and a network of utility equipment dealers to ensure high quality customer support is maintained throughout the country.
