Volvo Penta delivers Tier 4 Final-compliant 16-liter genset engine

Volvo Penta customers in North America now have access to two powerful 16-liter genset engines compliant with US EPA Tier 4 Final emissions legislation: the TWD1673GE and the TWD1672GE.


(CHESAPEAKE, Va.) – December 4, 2014 – Volvo Penta customers in North America now have access to two powerful 16-liter genset engines compliant with US EPA Tier 4 Final emissions legislation: the TWD1673GE and the TWD1672GE. Delivery is anticipated to begin in January 2015.
 
Tier 4 Final emission requirements in the US and Stage IV in the EU apply to engines used in off-road equipment, including agricultural and construction machines. But engines used in utility equipment working at constant speed, including generators, pumps and compressors, are also required by US EPA regulations to comply with Tier 4 Final. Engines working at constant speed in Europe, on the other hand, are not required to conform to Stage IV.
 
The new engines include the TWD1673GE, which is an update of the TWD1663GE Tier 4 Interim engine (both provide 570 kWe on prime power and 625 kWe on standby). The TWD1672GE is also available at 508 kWe on prime power and 559 kWe on standby. There have been no external dimension changes made to the new engines for maximum commonality with the TWD1663GE.
 
Both engines are reliable and robust, with new harnesses better designed for heavy-duty environments, as well as well proven selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology. Not all Tier 4 Final engines are created equal, as Volvo Penta’s SCR solution proves: downtime is reduced, as there is no need for a diesel particulate filter (DPF) or diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC), the solutions installed by most other engine manufacturers which require regular, costly maintenance and time-consuming regeneration to prevent high back pressures. In addition, because there is no exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), heat rejection is reduced, resulting in a smaller cooling system and easier packaging for OEMs, together with better power density than the competition and improved fuel economy for prime power applications.
 
These new engines can also be covered by Volvo Penta’s extended coverage options, providing greater peace of mind for customers for up to four additional years.
